FEMA has deemed September National Preparedness Month to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. Know the risks that may affect your property, have a plan in place for your employees and ensure your insurance is up to date. As we move into the later part of hail season, we are beginning to see less severe hail days. While there were still 20 days in August when hail was detected, the severity of the hail has decreased. It is important to note that in 2023, we did experience at least two days of severe hail in the second half of September, so do not let your guard down just yet when it comes to hail damage.

The tropics have been relatively quiet this month, though we are reaching the peak of hurricane season. There have only been five named storms so far, and the NOAA expects there to be anywhere from 17-24, so we are well behind that number. Hail larger than 2” can cause significant damage to your commercial property, so when a small town in Alabama experienced 3” hail, they needed an efficient roofing solution to help them return to normal business operations. Our team responded rapidly to the area to assist those who had been impacted by the storm. Stellar did a thorough check on this metal roof and determined there was damage.

We helped them navigate the restoration process by providing them with a detailed scope of work and communicating the amount of damage and the appropriate replacement and cost to the owner and insurance carrier. To minimize even more business interruption, we upgraded their roof to a single-ply retrofit roof, which meant the existing roof didn’t need to be removed.

TPO roofs are hail-resistant, and the added layers will provide them with more R-value. Although a damaged roof can seem daunting and the unknowns can provide headaches for your business, don’t forget that this is a great opportunity to upgrade your current roof system and prevent issues that old or damaged roofs can cause.
