Single-Ply Membrane Retrofits Explained
Single-ply membranes are sheets of rubber and other synthetics that are ballasted or chemically adhered to the roofing substrate, creating a sealed layer of protection against the elements for a facility. There are many reasons to retrofit a damaged or aging roof with these membranes, including:
- Low-Cost Investment
- Increases Roof Lifespan
- Sustainable
- Improves Energy Efficiency
- No Downtime
- Minimal Maintenance
- No Disposal Costs

Stellar Restoration is happy to perform a single-ply retrofit if you’re looking to breathe new life into your flat or low-slope roof. With decades of experience, Stellar Restoration can install the membrane competently, quickly, and affordably.
We offer thermoplastic polyolefin, polyvinyl chloride, and ethylene propylene diene monomer membrane retrofits. All are beneficial, but each one exhibits unique performance characteristics.
Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO)
Arguably the most popular single-ply roofing retrofit solution is TPO, and for a good reason. This membrane is durable, flexible, and resistant to chemicals and moisture. Its reflective appearance combats sunlight and ultraviolet light exposure, reducing energy usage.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
PVC membranes are lightweight, flexible, and flame-resistant, and they also resist chemicals as well as animal fats. Seams are welded together, eliminating leaks and interior dampness. These attributes minimize areas where mold and fungi could grow.
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM)
An EPDM membrane is composed of strong and durable synthetic rubber, offering excellent resistance to extreme weather. Its black surface can assist with snow melt and heat retention in colder climates, while its elasticity is well-suited for warmer and hail-prone areas.

A single-ply retrofit roof is a cost-effective roof replacement option. Typically installed over an existing metal roof, this roof type layers flute fill, fiber boards and TPO material to create a new barrier of protection for your building. This system can extend the life of your roof up to 20 years and is one of the quickest types of roof installs.
This roof type can be installed using two different methods: Mechanically Attached or Fully Adhered.
Mechanically Attached: In this installation process, our team lays the membrane and attaches it to the purlins using plates and fasteners. No adhesives are used, and this process provides moderate wind uplift performance.
Fully Adhered: Fasteners and plates are used to attach the insulation, and then we adhere to the membrane using TPO bonding adhesive. This method allows for wider TPO sheets, meaning fewer seams and better wind uplift performance.
